About this opportunity
Many students find that attaining meaningful experiences outside of school can be difficult. Whether you are interested in exploring a future career in healthcare, looking to develop professional skills, or hoping to give back to your community, volunteering can be a valuable way to build experience while making a positive impact.
The University Health Network (UHN) is Canada’s best ranked hospital, and it offers year-round volunteer opportunities for individuals who are interested in supporting patients, families, visitors and hospital staff. Volunteers can contribute in a variety of roles including, but not limited to administrative support, patient and familial support and inpatient services. These roles enable volunteers to develop skills in communication, teamwork, problem solving and customer service in a dynamic healthcare environment.
At UHN, volunteering can be especially beneficial for students considering careers in healthcare, social service or community-based professions. Although volunteering does not involve clinical responsibilities, it does provide valuable exposure in a healthcare setting and offer opportunities to interact with patients, families, staff and other volunteers. Moreover, students can gain experience working with a large professional organization and strengthen their future job, internship, scholarship or graduate school applications.
To meet the requirements of becoming a volunteer at UHN, applicants must be at least 16 years old and able to commit to a regular volunteer placement for a minimum of six months. Shifts typically range from two to four hours per week, and successful applicants must undergo an interview and an onboarding process before placement.
All in all, if you want to find a substantial way to gain experience and make a positive impact on your community, volunteering at UHN may be worth exploring. Visit UHN’s “Becoming a Volunteer” page to learn more about current opportunities and requirement criteria.
